That is why one of its latest features, <strong>Pencil Live Preview<\/strong>, is aimed precisely at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This feature is designed for those who draw or sketch ideas within Illustrator. Using it is easier than you think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open Illustrator and select the <strong>Pencil<\/strong> tool. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">You can also press\u00a0<strong>N<\/strong>, it&#8217;s the keyboard shortcut.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to <strong>Window<\/strong> and then <strong>Appearance<\/strong>. Click on the three horizontal lines symbol from the Appearance panel and uncheck the <strong>New Art Has Basic Appearance<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/illustrator_livepreview1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389947\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From the Appearance panel, select <strong>Stroke<\/strong> to adjust the stroke, its thickness, and more. In the top control bar, you can also change the stroke effect, opacity, and other sections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/illustrator_livepreview2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389949\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finally,<strong> drag with the mouse over the canvas to draw<\/strong> and release to finish the stroke. You will see how your drawing takes shape.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to apply any type of effect, just go to <strong>Effects<\/strong> and try the different options that Illustrator offers. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pencil Live Preview: This is how you can activate it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those users who use the Pencil tool in their daily routine will welcome the latest update of <strong>Adobe Illustrator<\/strong> with open arms. From now on, when using Pencil, we will be able to see <strong>what we are drawing in real time<\/strong>, which will provide us with more accurate results. Put it into practice with these guidelines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As before, we will need to <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">disable the option\u00a0<strong>New Art Has Basic Appearance<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>so that we can use <strong>Live preview.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double click on <strong>Pencil<\/strong> from the toolbar. From the Pencil options, <strong>check the Live preview box<\/strong> to enable it. Right below you can also enable <strong>Live curve fitting<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/illustrator_livepreview3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389952\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drag with the mouse and draw the shape you want. If you want, you can hold down the <strong>Option<\/strong> key (macOS) or <strong>Alt<\/strong> key (Windows) while dragging to make straight lines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you still cannot activate Live preview after following these steps, go to <strong> Illustrator &gt; Settings &gt; Performance <\/strong> (macOS) or <strong>Edit &gt; Preferences &gt; Performance <\/strong> (Windows) to enable the <strong>Real-Time Drawing and Editing<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Edit and change the shape of your paths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are not satisfied with the line you have drawn with Pencil, or simply want to change it, don&#8217;t worry: <strong>you can easily edit it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To <strong>extend the stroke<\/strong>, use the <strong>Selection<\/strong> tool and select which part you want to extend. Then, select <strong>Pencil<\/strong> and hover the mouse over the endpoint of the path. When the continuation icon appears, drag to extend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/illustrator_livepreview4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389954\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you want to <strong>connect two different paths<\/strong>, click on <strong>Selection<\/strong> and <strong>hold down Shift<\/strong> while dragging around the paths to select them. Select <strong>Pencil<\/strong> and position the mouse over the anchor point at the end of one of the two paths. Drag the mouse to the point of the other path and release when the continuation icon (\/) appears. You will see how both paths automatically join together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If what you want is to <strong>change the shape of a path,<\/strong> you need to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on the <strong>Selection<\/strong> tool and select which stroke you want to change the shape of. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then, go back to <strong>Pencil<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hover the <strong>mouse pointer<\/strong> over the path you want to change. When the small star icon disappears, drag to alter the shape. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discover other additional options for Pencil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you double-click on the Pencil tool, you will see a list of sections that you can modify to configure its operation. You can <strong>enable or disable them as you wish<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/illustrator_livepreview5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389956\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fidelity<\/strong>: Controls the distance at which you must move the cursor to add a new anchor point in the path.
