Now, you have to spend more than 1,100 euros to buy the console, the disc reader, and the stand. An absolute madness that is no longer justifiable.

And yes, Sony is raising prices worldwide, probably in reaction to the current memory shortage. Major memory semiconductor companies have redirected their entire business towards supplying high bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI data centers, which has caused a massive shortage for consumer devices.

This has driven up the prices of SSDs and RAM in general. Major manufacturers of desktop and laptop computers have regularly increased the cost of devices since the end of last year.

Sony has announced new price increases for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, effective April 2, 2026.

-PS5 base will rise to $649.99 for the disc version and $599.99 for the digital version in the US.

-PS5 Pro will go to $899.99.

-The PlayStation Portal will… pic.twitter.com/lfPVf3MNe4
— Pirat_Nation 🔴 (@Pirat_Nation) March 27, 2026

PS6? No one seems to have concrete data on how long the memory shortage could last. The president of the major memory manufacturer SK Hynix, Chey Tae-won, recently stated that the company may not be able to meet consumer RAM demand until “around” 2030.

Sony is raising the price of its PS5 consoles:

• PlayStation 5 – $549.99 to $649.99
• PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99 to $599.99
• PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99 to $899.99

PS5 Digital has now increased by $200 since its launch price of $399.99 https://t.co/BD8tYiRZ3X
— Tom Warren (@tomwarren) March 27, 2026

This is not how devices are supposed to evolve.
