NCSoft has officially announced Guild Wars<\/a>: Mistbound<\/strong>, a tactical collectible card game spin-off<\/a> for PC and mobile. It pushes the Guild Wars series past its MMORPG roots and into a very different kind of game.<\/p>\n

And it doesn\u2019t sound like a typical card battler with Guild Wars art pasted over it. NCSoft, working under license from ArenaNet and publishing through Bilibili, seems to be aiming for something that feels<\/strong> a lot closer to a strategy board game.<\/p>\n\n

Matches take place on a 5×3 grid<\/strong> and revolve around what NCSoft is calling \u201cDynamic Movement Gameplay.\u201d The big hook is that units and commanders can move every turn, which opens the door to flanking attacks, knockbacks, pulls, and the usual fight over board control. So the focus isn\u2019t mostly on card text, hand management, or simple stat-for-stat trades. Positioning matters.<\/p>\n\n

You\u2019ll also see familiar Guild Wars characters return as commanders, with abilities drawn from Guild Wars 2<\/a> professions<\/strong>. On top of that, Mistbound is set to include both single-player and multiplayer modes, with enough accessibility for newcomers but still meant to give more experienced strategy players something to dig into.<\/p>\n\n

There are still a few obvious question marks. Monetization hasn\u2019t<\/strong> really been explained yet, the single-player side is still light on detail, and early reaction from fans has been mixed.<\/p>\n\n

Still, if you\u2019ve wanted to see Guild Wars do something a little bolder than the usual easy cash-in, this one looks like it could be worth a look when it shows up. That feels even more relevant now that Guild Wars 3<\/a><\/strong> has been revealed and the series is clearly starting to stretch into new formats and chase new audiences.<\/p>\n\n
