On PS5, offline split-screen play won’t require PlayStation Plus after all. The studio said its earlier statement was wrong, following player backlash over the suggestion that two-player couch co-op would need two active PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

That earlier message landed badly. For a feature as old-school and straightforward as local co-op, a lot of players read it as both confusing and hostile to consumers.

There is still a catch if you’re planning to play side by side on one PS5. Halo Studios says local co-op requires two PlayStation Network accounts, and each of those accounts must also be linked to a Microsoft account. The studio says that’s tied to cross-platform progression.

Online play is different. On PS5, you’ll still need PlayStation Plus for that, according to Halo Studios. That split between offline and online matters, especially with Halo: Campaign Evolved making its PlayStation debut under the close watch that comes with Microsoft’s wider multiplatform push.

So if couch co-op on PS5 was your plan, this clears things up in a good way. It’s a lot less restrictive than the two-subscription setup people were first told to expect.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign, and it launches July 28, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Halo Studios has walked back one part of its messaging around Halo: Campaign Evolved ahead of the game’s July 28, 2026 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
