That puts its stripped-down competitive format on phones too, where most matches wrap up in under five minutes.

Producer Masaaki Hoshino said shortening battles was one of the team’s earliest goals. The team had seen that even Pokémon Unite‘s 10-minute matches could already feel like a stretch for some players. So Pokémon Champions moves faster across the board: battle animations are quicker, team setup is easier to manage, and if a match is clearly over, you can just forfeit instead of sitting through the rest of it.

The timing of that shift isn’t small. The Pokémon Company has named Pokémon Champions the official home of the Pokémon Video Game Championships, including the Pokémon World Championships. Organized competitive play now has a platform built for it, rather than riding along with whatever pace the mainline RPG release schedule happens to set.

The rollout came in two steps. Pokémon Champions launched first on Nintendo Switch on April 8, 2026, then made its way to mobile on June 17, 2026. It’s free to start and works across platforms, which helped push it to No. 1 on Apple’s iPhone App Store in 13 countries, the US and Japan among them, based on App Store rankings.

If faster, more competitive Pokémon battles are what you want on Nintendo Switch or mobile, this one’s easy to recommend a look. Still, the response from players hasn’t been all one way.

A lot of players have pointed to the game’s strategic depth and the smoother team-building tools as big improvements. They’ve also pushed back on the original Nintendo Switch performance, the monetization, and the launch roster , which started at 186 Pokémon. Pokémon Champions is available to download now on Nintendo Switch and mobile.

Pokémon Champions hit mobile on June 17, 2026, a little over two months after its Nintendo Switch launch on April 8, 2026.
