Like, dislike, and share sit underneath the video now. Engagement counts are less prominent, and save, download, and report have been pushed into that three-dot overflow menu. It does make the screen look cleaner. If you use those options a lot, though, you’ll notice the extra tap.

A huge share of YouTube viewing happens on mobile, so even minor interface changes can land fast. People who watch on their phones lean hard on muscle memory and quick visual cues, and creators could feel it too if likes, shares, and other signals are less visible at a glance. Early reactions on Reddit and in regional forums have been mixed.

Plenty of users on Reddit, and on forums in Germany, Japan, and Brazil, have been unhappy with the update. UX and UI analysts have also pointed to the lighter use of text labels and the stronger dependence on menus. The change also fits into YouTube’s wider redesign push across the web and smart TVs, along with mobile font tests using YouTube Sans Condensed, experiments with swipeable Subscriptions, and YouTube Partner Program membership pricing changes tied to exchange rates.

If you watch YouTube on your phone every day, this is one to keep an eye on, even if the new layout doesn’t end up feeling any easier to use.
