The 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32, the tournament’s new opening knockout round, starts this Sunday. This guide walks through how to watch those matches live for free through official broadcasters. That’s usually the point when I start looking at the weekend schedule properly. The couch is ready. The WhatsApp group won’t stop buzzing. And you get that familiar feeling that one match can make your whole afternoon, or have you replaying it in your head for hours. The 2026 World Cup adds something else to that mood too, because Sunday is the start of the kind of nights people still bring up years later.

The group stage is done, and so is any margin for error for the best national teams in the world. Now we get the most tense, dramatic, unforgiving stretch of the tournament: the knockout rounds. One bad game, one mistake at the back in the 90th minute, one penalty shootout that goes sideways, and anyone can be out, favorites included.

When the stakes get that high, a little extra help matters. Tools like ExpressVPN can make it much easier to reach, where local laws and platform terms allow, the official platforms of public broadcasters in other countries that stream World Cup matches for free online and through free live broadcasts. You connect through international servers and skip a lot of the usual friction.

If you want to follow the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 without having the plan wrecked by subscription paywalls, this is the guide you need.

Why does the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 change the tournament forever?

This edition is already different for one clear reason: under FIFA’s 2026 format, it’s the first World Cup with 48 national teams. That changes the whole shape of the competition, because the Round of 32 now exists at a World Cup for the first time. Getting out of the group no longer sends teams straight to the Round of 16. Now 32 teams have to get through one more win-or-go-home match before they can even think about that stage.

That changes the tension in every tie. The World Cup always tightens once it becomes survive or leave, but here the emotional strain starts earlier. This first knockout round already feels like a final for a lot of teams, and for those of us watching from home, that means more huge matches, more storylines crashing into each other, and less time to look away.

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32

If there’s one storyline that’s going to keep half the planet glued to a screen from Sunday on, it’s the chance of a genuine last dance for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. We’re almost certainly watching the final chapters of the biggest rivalry the sport has ever had: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, now 39 and 41, respectively, still there as the tournament turns serious.

Lionel Messi and Argentina’s push for back-to-back titles

Every Argentina knockout match feels like an emotional ride. After reaching the top in Qatar, Lionel Messi leads Argentina into one last campaign on North American soil, a region he already knows well and where he’ll also have plenty of support in the stands.

But in the 2026 World Cup knockout format, every match could be the last one. Nobody wants to miss what might be the final curtain call for the genius from Rosario, and that alone makes any Argentina fixture one of those matches fans try to lock into their schedule long before kickoff.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his refusal to let time win

On the other side of the bracket is Cristiano Ronaldo, doing what he’s done for years: pushing back against time and against limits most people would’ve accepted a long time ago. The Portuguese forward leads a Portugal squad full of young talent and is still chasing the one major trophy missing from his collection to complete a career that already belongs in football history.

The feeling around him is pretty similar to the one around Messi. If Portugal loses in this Round of 32, his World Cup journey is over, and that possibility alone sends interest through the roof. The idea of watching either of these two giants go out early turns every match into the kind of occasion people remember for a very long time.

Which teams should you watch in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32?

Beyond those two legends, the knockout stage also shifts attention to the teams expected to take over next. Several heavyweights have arrived with plenty of reasons to make any football fan clear the schedule.

Spain and the fearless brilliance of Lamine Yamal

Spain has been one of the most entertaining, direct teams in the tournament, and a big part of that is Lamine Yamal. His confidence, the way he dribbles without warning, and the maturity he shows at his age have made the Spanish winger the breakout star of the competition.

Crowds in the United States have clearly taken to him, and plenty of fans are seeking out Spain’s matches almost by reflex just to see what he does in his first World Cup knockout appearances. Spain promises a show, although these rounds have a way of reminding young teams that talent still needs the support of experience if they want to stay alive.

Brazil and the endless pressure of Jogo Bonito

With Brazil, winning has never been enough by itself. Brazil comes into the Round of 32 carrying the old pressure of adding a sixth star to the badge and, as always, doing it with style. With its attacking stars in top form, Brazil’s matches are going to pull huge audiences across the continent.

So when Brazil steps onto the field, people aren’t waiting only for the result. They want a performance that lives up to the myth, and that still carries enormous weight in any World Cup knockout round.

""

The United States and the chance to do it at home

For the United States, these home knockout games mean more than one extra round. The United States men’s national team (USMNT) got through the group stage with a fully engaged fan base behind it and a core of players who are now well established in European leagues.

Now comes the Round of 32, and the Stars and Stripes have a chance to make a real statement, to show that soccer in the United States isn’t just a future promise anymore. It’s a real competitive force right now. Doing that in front of a home crowd only adds to it.

France, Germany, and England: three giants, one goal

For the rest of the field, Europe’s top contenders look like the draw nobody wants. France, with a devastating attack led by Ousmane Dembélé and Kylian Mbappé, is trying to take back the crown with the kind of athleticism, talent, and finishing power that doesn’t need much selling.

Germany has looked like Germany. Tactical order, high-level football, and the sort of discipline that makes it one of the least appealing opponents you could meet in the next round. England, meanwhile, has one of the deepest, most expensive, most talented squads it’s ever brought to a major tournament, and once again it arrives with the familiar mission of bringing the trophy home.

Any one of those three could absolutely lift the trophy on July 19 in New Jersey, but first they have to get through the traps built into this new opening knockout round. The Round of 32 has no interest in badges or reputations once a match tightens up and the clock starts moving against you.

Why is it hard to watch the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 live?

People all over the world want to follow these matches, but access to live broadcasts and live streams isn’t equal. In much of the United States and Latin America, World Cup coverage has been divided between pay TV companies and streaming platforms with exclusive rights.

So if you want full access to the Round of 32, the Round of 16, the quarterfinals, and the later stages, a lot of viewers wind up stacking multiple monthly subscriptions or paying for expensive premium bundles. And when all you want is to sit down for a big match, few things are more irritating than discovering that this specific game is on a completely different platform.

There is another route. When international public broadcasts are involved, it can be legal, secure, and free, where local laws and platform terms allow. In several countries across Europe and Asia, the FIFA World Cup is treated as an event of public interest, so public broadcasters stream dozens of matches live on their official websites and apps at no cost.

The main obstacle is geo-blocking. These platforms limit access to users inside their own territories, but a VPN can route your web traffic through an encrypted server in another country and hide your real location. Pick a server in Madrid, for example, and Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE will read it as a local connection and allow access to the live stream even if you’re actually in New York, Mexico City, or Buenos Aires. And no, you don’t need to be a cybersecurity expert to set it up.

Where can you watch the 2026 World Cup live for free?

Before the matches start on Sunday, it’s good to know which public broadcasters are offering free coverage and what each one actually gives you.

Spain: RTVE

RTVE says it will show every Spain match, along with the biggest knockout games on each matchday and, of course, the final. If your main priority is Spain and you also want the headline ties, this is a strong option to keep in mind for a free World Cup live stream.

United Kingdom: BBC and ITVX

In the UK, BBC and ITVX split the rights, and the result is one of the strongest free coverage packages anywhere. Streams are usually stable, available in high definition, and backed by polished production. That matters when a match drags into extra time or gets settled from the spot.

Germany: ARD and ZDF

ARD and ZDF say they’ll carry 60 matches live during the tournament. That gives you wide coverage of the top European contenders and makes Germany one of the more useful locations if you want flexibility when choosing a stream.

France: M6

M6 says it has the rights to air 54 of the tournament’s biggest matches free-to-air, including several decisive knockout games. It’s another solid option to have in mind for the biggest fixtures.

Brazil: TV Globo and SBT

Brazilian broadcasters TV Globo and SBT will offer free Portuguese-language coverage of every Brazil match, along with several major ties and later knockout rounds. And for a lot of us, even when Brazil isn’t the team we’re following most closely, Brazilian coverage brings a football atmosphere that just fits a big tournament night.

How to watch the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 live for free

This is where the convenience piece really kicks in. If your goal is to watch the knockout rounds free-to-air through official international broadcasters, it’s worth setting everything up ahead of time so you’re not scrambling five minutes before kickoff.

1. Pick your plan and get your connection ready

Create an ExpressVPN account using any tournament promotions that are available. The idea isn’t to mess with complicated settings. It’s to get access sorted from the start, including the international servers you’ll likely need throughout the knockout stage.

2. Install the app on the screen you’ll actually use

Download and install the app on your preferred device, whether that’s a smart TV, computer, tablet, or smartphone. Most people switch screens depending on the hour, the room, or whether they’re still out when the match starts, so it helps to have at least a couple of devices ready.

3. Connect to the country of the public broadcaster you want

Open the app and choose a secure server in the country of the channel you want to watch. Use Spain if you want RTVE, or the UK if you’d rather use ITVX. It takes a moment, but this is the step that gets you past geo-blocking in a clean, reliable way.

4. Open the official website or app and start the match

Go to the broadcaster’s official website or streaming app and launch the live match or live stream. That’s it. If your connection is solid, the experience feels a lot closer to actually enjoying the game than dealing with shady links, endless buffering, or pages stuffed with ads and malware.

Why ExpressVPN helps with smoother World Cup live streams

Once the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches the knockout rounds, the technical side stops feeling optional. In live sport, speed and stability matter. A second of delay, or a drop in image quality during a penalty shootout, is enough to ruin the moment. After looking at the best-known options out there, ExpressVPN still looks like one of the most complete tools for watching live sports for a simple reason: strong performance, ease of use, and extra security, all without turning your home setup into a project.
