Valve put the 2026 Steam Machine on sale today for $1,049<\/strong>, bringing a compact, console-style SteamOS<\/a> gaming PC back into the living room. The machine itself has plenty going for it: a design people already like, and the kind of Steam Deck-style simplicity that makes PC gaming feel less fussy. But the price is the part that jumps out. Valve had originally hoped to land somewhere around $700 to $750. At $1,049, the 2026 Steam Machine is lining up against the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X, and small-form-factor PCs in the same range that may give you more flexibility.<\/p>\n

Valve says RAM and storage prices<\/a><\/strong> are what pushed the 2026 Steam Machine so far past that target, and its engineers are already cautioning buyers not to expect a quick cut. Their warning is pretty direct: memory shortages could drag on until at least 2028, so a near-term drop isn’t something to bank on.<\/p>\n\n

If you want a second take on the Steam Machine idea, this is probably one to watch instead of rush out and buy right away. The old multi-vendor Steam Machines petered out in 2018 after weak adoption, inconsistent hardware, and software support that never really came together. Valve’s in-house follow-up has a different angle. It leans on SteamOS and a much better<\/strong> Proton<\/a> layer to make PC gaming feel more like using an appliance.
