Taylor Sheridan’s script and Berg’s film seem to be leaning toward a grounded, present-day war thriller, the kind built around current geopolitical strain, elite military units, and missions where the ethics get messy fast. It doesn’t sound like they’re pulling pieces from every corner of the franchise and blending together the sci-fi games, the historical ones, and everything else.

Modern Warfare is also the easiest way in for general audiences and longtime players alike. The 2019 reboot reportedly sold 41 million copies. Call of Duty as a whole has reportedly brought in more than $35 billion and reached over 1 billion players. Berg and Sheridan have both said they want the movie to feel authentic, from the tactical side to the people caught up in it. Still, some fans haven’t forgotten Berg’s comments about gamers from 2013, and there’s already some concern that this adaptation will need more than big explosions and recognizable imagery if it wants to land with any real nuance.

If what you want from Call of Duty is a heavier, more serious adaptation, this one looks like it could be worth keeping an eye on, especially since Paramount reportedly sees it as a possible starting point for more films and TV projects. The release date is June 30, 2028.

Paramount has dated its Call of Duty movie for June 30, 2028, and director Peter Berg says it’ll be tied closely to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
