The case goes back to March 2024, when the Commission first opened proceedings.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That 890 million euro total also makes this, based on the enforcement record so far, the <strong>biggest fine yet<\/strong> under the EU\u2019s new platform rules.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the total, <strong>460 million euros<\/strong> is tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/search-deflector.en.softonic.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Search<\/a>. Regulators say Google gave its own shopping, hotel, travel, and sports results better placement than rival services, without offering the transparent, fair, and non-discriminatory terms the DMA requires. The other 430 million euros covers <a href=\"https:\/\/google-play.en.softonic.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Play<\/a>, where regulators say developers were prevented from freely steering users to cheaper payment options outside the app store.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google now has <strong>60 days<\/strong> to comply. If it doesn\u2019t, it could face periodic penalties of up to 5% of Alphabet\u2019s average daily worldwide turnover. The DMA itself allows fines of up to 10% of global annual revenue for a first breach, and up to 20% for repeat offenses.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case began in <strong>March 2024<\/strong>, after the DMA\u2019s obligations took effect, and it follows Google\u2019s 2023 gatekeeper designation by the European Commission for Search, <a href=\"https:\/\/android-studio.en.softonic.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Android<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.en.softonic.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chrome<\/a>, and Google Play. Apple and Meta had already been fined in April 2025, 500 million euros and 200 million euros respectively.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you follow Big Tech regulation, keep an eye on this one. The European Commission says the DMA is now driving <strong>real product changes<\/strong>.
