ABC\u2019s Lost pilot turned 20 on September 22, 2024, and that anniversary puts the spotlight back on what still might be J.J. Abrams\u2019 best piece of feature-length storytelling, better, I\u2019d argue, than even Star Trek or Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When Part 1 of Lost premiered on ABC on September 22, 2004, it didn\u2019t feel like a typical network drama. You could tell that right away. Nielsen says it pulled in 18.6 million viewers<\/strong>, kicked off a franchise that ran six seasons and 121 episodes, and arrived with a TV-pilot budget reportedly between $10 million and $14 million, all of it right there on the screen. The crash of Oceanic Flight 815 lands with real blockbuster impact. The ensemble is huge, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Hurley, Charlie, and Sayid among them, but the episode never loses its pace. And the early mystery beats, the unseen creature, the sounds in the jungle, that creeping sense that staying alive was only the beginning, helped move serialized TV, online theory culture, and big-event network storytelling into a different gear.<\/p>\n\n

If you come to Lost for spectacle, character, and mystery, going back to it still pays off, and I\u2019d say the pilot handles that mix better than Abrams\u2019 bigger theatrical hits. That includes Star Wars: The Force Awakens, even with its more than $2 billion worldwide haul<\/strong>, according to Box Office Mojo, and even with there still being no official reboot, despite comments from Drew Goddard and Josh Holloway.<\/p>\n\n
