Sony Pictures dropped the first trailer today for its new Resident Evil reboot, and it\u2019s clearly aiming for something meaner and bloodier, with Barbarian director Zach Cregger pushing the movie closer to straight horror.<\/p>\n

This time, the story doesn\u2019t center on Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, or Jill Valentine. It follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, in an original plot<\/strong> that unfolds alongside Resident Evil 2<\/a> rather than trying to retell it beat for beat.<\/p>\n\n

That choice is already splitting the fanbase. Anyone hoping for a direct, faithful run through the games\u2019 main story may see this as more of a standalone survival-horror spin on the series. If you\u2019re after something less familiar, though, there may be enough here to make it appealing. The trailer also slips in a few nods for longtime players, including the typewriter save point and shotgun shell branding<\/strong> that points back to Resident Evil 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

This is the second Resident Evil<\/strong> reset in fairly quick succession, after Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City got a mixed response and Netflix\u2019s Resident Evil series was canceled, so there\u2019s not much room for this one to stumble. Cregger has said he wanted to make a strong horror movie first and a game adaptation second, and the early test screening chatter has been encouraging, with one viewer describing it as a \u201chorror version of Fury Road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
