Brandon Sanderson says he turned in the completed first-draft screenplay for Apple TV+<\/a>\u2019s film adaptation of Mistborn: The Final Empire<\/em> by his July 2026 deadline<\/strong>, which gives fans their clearest picture of the project in years.<\/p>\n

He says he hit that July 2026 target<\/strong> and sent the script to Apple TV+ on the 20th anniversary of Mistborn: The Final Empire<\/em>. That sounds big, and it is, but it doesn\u2019t mean cameras are about to start rolling. Apple TV+ will likely review the draft first, then move into a director search, and the movie still has no director, no cast, and no production start date. From where things stand now, 2028 or later looks more likely than 2027.<\/p>\n\n

For people who\u2019ve been waiting on this adaptation, the update matters for another reason. Sanderson says he has an unusually high level of control<\/strong> on the writing, producing, and consulting side under Apple TV+\u2019s larger Cosmere deal, and he\u2019s been pushing a script-first process that leaves room to add scenes or reshape character beats without stripping out what makes the book work.<\/p>\n\n

You still can\u2019t watch it, of course. The movie remains in early development at Apple TV+, built on a series that Sanderson says has sold more than 10 million copies<\/strong> in over 35 languages and still looks well suited to a fantasy franchise, given the metal-based magic system, the heist setup, and that ash-covered world.<\/p>\n
