It follows Maddie Schwartz, a Jewish housewife who becomes a reporter, and Cleo Johnson, a Black mother whose death barely registers while the disappearance of a young girl draws most of the public attention.

The series is based on Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel and takes inspiration from the 1969 deaths of Esther Lebowitz and Shirley Parker. So it doesn’t stay in standard whodunit territory for long. It gets into race, religion, class, grief, and the question of whose stories get told and whose don’t.

Natalie Portman stars here in her first leading TV role. Moses Ingram, though, is the one who’s gotten the strongest notices from critics. The atmosphere and cinematography have also been praised, even if some reviewers think the style and social commentary are laid on a little too thick.

If you’re in the mood for another dark, character-driven mystery after Mare of Easttown, this is probably one to put on the list. The reviews have landed somewhere between mixed and positive, and it currently holds a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

One odd production note: filming in Baltimore briefly stopped in August 2022 after reported threats, which police later said were unsubstantiated. Viewership data, meanwhile, is still pretty limited.

You can watch Lady in the Lake on Apple TV+.

Lady in the Lake is streaming now on Apple TV+.
