The reported redesign is part of the company’s wider “Windows K2” push around user experience, and the idea seems straightforward enough, a menu that’s faster and less of a mess.

That lines up with one of the biggest complaints people have had about Windows 11 since launch. The current menu can feel slow, crowded, and a little clumsy, largely because it seems to load every registered third-party extension at the same time. The new version is expected to put the actions people use most up front in a tighter layout, and for the first time, let users add, remove, and reorder menu items.

Microsoft still hasn’t officially announced the redesign. Still, Windows design chief Marcus Ash has said the team is working on context menus that are “faster, simpler by default,” configurable based on what you use most, and recent Windows Insider builds already hint at that cleanup. There’s a new “Manage file” submenu for options you probably don’t need as often, plus text labels on File Explorer context menu icons so it’s easier to tell what each action does.

If you’re on Windows 11 every day, this is one of those small changes that could matter a lot. The context menu is a basic tool, but it’s one you’re constantly using, and this update could finally make it feel less frustrating. Microsoft, though, still hasn’t shared a release date, any developer API details, or a bigger plan for the Insider rollout.

You can’t download the new Windows 11 context menu yet. It’s expected to show up in a future Windows 11 update, possibly before the end of the year.

Microsoft looks to be reworking one of the more annoying parts of Windows 11: the right-click context menu.
