Back in June 2025, reporting on an earlier Android 16 beta, again widely tied to Rahman’s teardown work, suggested the feature only worked from the lock screen. Pixel users have also had to lean on launchers or third-party apps for something Samsung, OnePlus, and other Android phones already offer.

If you use a Pixel every day, this is the kind of small fix that can make the phone feel better in practice. You could lock it one-handed from the home screen, the overall experience would feel more finished, and the power button might take a little less wear over time.

Google still hasn’t confirmed any of it, shown it publicly, or shared support details. For now, the reporting still comes from the beta teardown work widely associated with Rahman.

There’s no release date yet, either. We also don’t know which Pixel models would support it, or whether Google plans to include settings like sensitivity controls or a simple on/off toggle.

Right now, it’s just code inside Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3. The same teardown reporting also says the beta includes native App Lock, more Quick Settings customization, and stronger lock-screen blur effects, so there’s still no promise that any of it will actually ship.

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 seems to include code for a Pixel double-tap-to-lock gesture.
