The film follows Paul Atreides on Arrakis as he joins the Fremen, goes to war with House Harkonnen, and gets pulled deeper into questions of fate, prophecy, and the danger of turning a political leader into a messianic figure. If you like Star Wars-sized spectacle mixed with Game of Thrones-style politics, this is very much in that lane.

Critics were already on board with Dune from 2021, which holds an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but Part Two has plainly pushed things higher. A lot of the praise has gone to the visuals, the large-format action, the sound design, Hans Zimmer’s score, and the performances from Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Austin Butler. It also plays as more emotional, better paced, and more exciting, which says a lot for a story people spent years calling unfilmable.

It’s also brought in more than $700 million worldwide, according to box office tallies, against a reported $190 million budget and roughly $100 million in marketing. That only adds to the momentum behind Denis Villeneuve’s move toward Dune Messiah, where Paul Atreides is expected to face darker consequences and Princess Irulan should have a bigger role, even as some viewers and critics keep debating the subtitles used for the Fremen language and the films’ Middle Eastern and North African influences.

You can stream Dune: Part Two on HBO Max now.

Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve’s 2024 follow-up, is now on HBO Max, so one of the year’s biggest movies has finally made its way to your screen.
