Hal is caught off guard. Sinestro flat-out describes it as an advanced, highly unusual ability. So the scene doesn’t play like a bit of visual style for TV. It reads as John doing something most Lanterns simply can’t. That shifts the canon a little, too, because comic-book John Stewart has usually been defined by discipline, precision, and solid, carefully engineered constructs shaped by his Marine and architect background. His strength has generally come from skill and control, not from bending the usual rules.

Since HBO’s Lanterns gives John this ability while he’s still a trainee, it’s easy to read it as something innate. And that’s already sparked speculation that he may be some kind of chosen-one figure, or at least a key piece of the larger mystery the show is building toward.
