Reports claim Apple left behind references to two unreleased models, B868M and B868E. If that reading is right, they’d point to a standard version and an Active Noise Cancellation version, following the same two-tier setup used for AirPods 4 and giving buyers a less expensive option than AirPods Pro.

Those model numbers also line up with Apple’s recent naming pattern. AirPods 4 reportedly used B768M and B768E, which makes this look more like a straight successor than some side project. Still, code references on their own don’t prove a launch is locked in. They may just show Apple getting support ready across its software before the fall event.

For people who usually buy Apple’s regular earbuds, AirPods 5 could be the one to watch. That’s especially true if the rumored H3 chip actually shows up with better sound, lower latency, improved power efficiency, and quicker Siri voice assistant performance. Price, battery life, design, release timing, and whatever else Apple may have added are still up in the air.

If Apple does unveil them, AirPods 5 will probably hit the company’s usual retail channels as part of a bigger September refresh that could also bring new Apple Watches. One other detail in the rumor cycle: the camera-equipped AirPods model now appears to have slipped to 2027.

Apple’s AirPods 5 are now rumored for a September 9 debut.
