U.S. spending on console hardware fell 29% year over year in July 2026. The Xbox Series X has gone from $500 to $800, and Sony’s PlayStation 5 has climbed from $500 to $650.

Analysts are now warning that the next Xbox and the next PlayStation, both expected in 2028, could hit $1,000. If that happens, five-year adoption could drop by 38%, and by 2031 the games-and-services market could be $3.4 billion smaller than it would be with a $700 launch price.

Sharma has reportedly called the component squeeze a “Rampocalypse.” Xbox is also talking more openly about different ways to buy in, including possible tiers or payment plans. The disc drive question is still hanging there, even though more than 90% of Xbox game sales are already digital and the disc-to-digital feature is already live.

If you’re thinking about your next console upgrade, this is one to keep an eye on. Project Helix isn’t out yet, and current Xbox hardware is still available through Microsoft and major retailers.

Xbox is already setting expectations for its next console, Project Helix.
