What players got in return was the loss of the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, four more campaigns, nine strikes, five raids, along with destinations and side activities plenty of people had already paid for. Project Sunrise started with people wandering through empty maps. It’s moved well past that. There are now enemy and vendor spawns, tests involving raid bosses such as Calus, and, according to the Project Sunrise community, plans for loadouts and playable older missions, even if the whole thing is still constrained by its offline, single-player setup.

For anyone who cares about game preservation, this matters. Live-service games are notoriously difficult to preserve once the updates stop, the backend systems go away, or the servers shut down. Bungie itself reportedly ran into that problem too: reports tied to one copyright case said the company had trouble producing in-game evidence because the relevant material had already been removed.

You can keep up with Project Sunrise through its community-run PC setup, built on an older version of Destiny 2, where players are trying to preserve the game’s lost history on their own.

Project Sunrise, a community preservation project centered on Bungie’s Destiny 2, is now working to rebuild vaulted Destiny 2 content and restore offline, single-player access to older locations and activities that Bungie cut from the live game.
