War Machine, Patrick Hughes’ $80 million military sci-fi action movie starring Alan Ritchson, premiered on March 6, 2026 and wasted no time taking off. It became Netflix’s top film worldwide for two straight weeks, landed in the Top 10 in 93 countries, and hit number one in 87 of them. A sequel is already in the works, helped along by the strong audience response to its fun, old-school action.

        Netflix
        Download

        <text class="rating-score__number" content="" text-anchor="middle" transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 25 31.0837)" data-auto="app-user-score"></text>

That makes War Machine a pretty convincing test case. A high-concept, star-driven sci-fi movie with no built-in franchise can still play around the world, and it also further cements Alan Ritchson as one of Netflix’s steadiest action leads.

Gundam is the riskier, bigger play. Netflix is distributing Jim Mickle’s live-action Gundam for Legendary Pictures, Bandai Namco Filmworks, and Nightshade, with Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo playing rival mech pilots. The story is original, which matters here, because the movie is clearly aiming for younger and broader audiences instead of tying itself to one beloved anime storyline.

So if Netflix is where you go for big, crowd-friendly sci-fi, its 2026 lineup looks like one to keep an eye on, even with the usual doubts that follow Hollywood anime adaptations, especially in Japan.

You can watch War Machine on Netflix now. Gundam, meanwhile, wrapped in Queensland in July 2026 after employing more than 350 crew members and contributing an estimated $110 million to the local economy, and it’s currently aiming for 2027.

Netflix’s 2026 sci-fi plan is starting to look pretty clear, and it comes down to two films: War Machine and Gundam.
