That kind of exposure hasn\u2019t brought much goodwill with it, though. The film is sitting at 45% with audiences and 41% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which tells you pretty clearly what\u2019s going on here: people are pressing play more than they\u2019re actually loving it.<\/p>\n

Based on Alex North\u2019s bestselling novel, The Whisper Man centers on a widowed crime writer and his young son, who relocate to a town still marked by the legacy of a serial killer<\/strong> known as The Whisper Man. De Niro plays the retired detective drawn back into another investigation, and the supporting cast includes Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan, and Michael Keaton.<\/p>\n\n

If De Niro, the gloomy premise, and the prestige-heavy cast are what got your attention, this could still work as a late-summer watch. But the first wave of reactions hasn\u2019t been especially kind. A lot of them say The Whisper Man feels too familiar<\/strong>, leans hard on stock serial-killer material, and hasn\u2019t sparked much of a critics-versus-audiences divide. We\u2019ll see, over time, how it stacks up against the novel, how it lands with viewers outside the US, and where it ends up ranking among De Niro\u2019s recent streaming releases.<\/p>\n\n
