The film version of Project Hail Mary helped push that along when it turned into one of 2026’s biggest hits, pulling in more than $685 million worldwide, based on box-office totals. A movie that was respected from the start but didn’t get immediate critical agreement is now often treated as one of the century’s major sci-fi releases. On Letterboxd, people have even called it the platform’s most popular film.

If you haven’t gone back to Interstellar since 2014, it’s probably time. Cooper leaving his children behind on a dying Earth and heading through a wormhole still gives the movie its shape, but what lingers is how it turns black holes, time dilation, and survival into a story about grief, parental love , longing, sacrifice, and the damage duty can do inside one family.

The Project Hail Mary comparison makes sense if you’re thinking about the near-impossible mission to stop extinction. The Godfather comparison may actually tell you more. That gets you closer to Interstellar’s operatic family stakes, its sense of legacy, and the weight of decisions that can’t be taken back. It also helps explain why the film now looks like a bridge between Christopher Nolan’s cooler, more cerebral early work and the stronger emotional pull that runs through Oppenheimer and Nolan’s The Odyssey.

You can still watch Interstellar on the major streaming services and digital rental platforms.

Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film Interstellar is getting a real second look in 2026, more than a decade after it came out.
