The target is 2030. Platforms still haven’t been announced.

The company is also drawing a hard line on what this thing isn’t. It isn’t a seasonal game, and it isn’t being pitched as a live-service platform. You’ll create and name your own protagonist, then play through a more personal story rather than following the usual faction leaders.

Blizzard says you’ll be taking on weighty story missions, but it won’t lock you into banging your head against the same fight until it breaks. If an encounter is too tough, you can walk away, roam the world, scavenge for better gear, upgrade your armor, and come back later.

Dan Hay is leading the project. He’s StarCraft’s general manager and creative director, and he’s still best known for Far Cry 3 through Far Cry 6. From the way Blizzard describes the structure, this sounds awfully close to the Far Cry playbook, which could be exactly what pushes StarCraft past its niche RTS crowd.

The story takes place 70 years after StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, which gives Blizzard plenty of room to reshape the setting with new power structures, splinter groups, and original characters.

If what you wanted was StarCraft brought back as a bigger action game, this is one to keep an eye on. Reactions are mixed, though, for obvious reasons: it’s the first new StarCraft in about a decade, it arrives after the canceled StarCraft: Ghost and StarCraft: Ares projects, it moves even farther away from RTS, and it’s still a long way out.

Blizzard used BlizzCon 2026 to unveil a new StarCraft game: a narrative-driven open-world shooter built as a standalone boxed release, with a defined beginning, middle, and end.
