Consumer chatbots still give answers from knowledge that may already be stale. As of September 2026, that hasn\u2019t changed for a simple reason: training a model takes time<\/strong>, and it takes money. By the time a new version is released, some of its built-in knowledge can already be behind the latest news , newer products, and current prices.<\/p>\n

You can see that lag in the cutoff dates. Anthropic\u2019s Claude Opus 5 reportedly is current through May 2026<\/strong>. OpenAI\u2019s GPT-5.6 goes to February 16, 2026. Google\u2019s Gemini 3.7 Flash is listed through March 2026, although some topics may only be accurate to January 2025. OpenAI\u2019s GPT-4o goes back much further, to October 2023.<\/p>\n\n

Web search, also called retrieval-augmented generation, helps with breaking news<\/strong> , shopping, sports, and product launches. It does not refresh the model itself. The system can still misread what it pulls in, or combine newer facts with older assumptions that were already baked into the model.<\/p>\n\n

In tests, OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT and Google\u2019s Gemini identified Apple\u2019s latest phones as the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo. Anthropic\u2019s Claude answered with the older iPhone 17 line instead. Asked about Anthropic\u2019s flagship model, ChatGPT said the newest one was Claude Fable 5.1<\/strong> from September 2026. Claude 4.6 gave a different answer, saying Claude Opus 5 was the newest broad release and that Fable 5.1 was limited-access.<\/p>\n\n

If you use chatbots for products, prices, health, or legal guidance, don\u2019t treat the answer as final<\/strong>. Bigger models can still sound confident when they\u2019re wrong, especially outside the US and in non-English languages. Use the response as a starting point, then check it.<\/p>\n\n
