As the second episode of Season 1, it made clear that this series had bigger things on its mind than a simple monster-of-the-week case. Mulder and Scully head to Utah to investigate disappearances near an Air Force base, and the trail quickly opens onto military cover-ups, UFO lore, experimental aircraft built from alien technology, and that eerie moment when Mulder catches a glimpse of a triangular craft before his memory is erased.

        Disney+
        Download

        <text class="rating-score__number" content="" text-anchor="middle" transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 25 31.0837)" data-auto="app-user-score"></text>

Jerry Hardin’s Deep Throat shows up here as both warning bell and gatekeeper. He helps Mulder, keeps things from him, nudges him, misleads him, and keeps pulling him a little closer to “the truth.” Chris Carter built the character with the Watergate source and Donald Sutherland’s figure in JFK in mind, so Deep Throat was baked into the mythology from the beginning, not a happy accident the way William B. Davis’s Cigarette Smoking Man later was.

If you want to pinpoint the episode where Mulder’s larger story really clicks into place, “Deep Throat” still holds up as the one to go back to. That’s even more true knowing where the character ends up: later connected to Ronald Pakula and the Syndicate, killed off in “The Erlenmeyer Flask,” then brought back through flashbacks and visions before the show made room for X as the next informant.
