In Classic mode, when a unit falls, they’re gone for that playthrough, and their supports, gifts, meals, and activities go with them.

Act 1’s Heroic Games changes the formula a bit. Defeated units retreat, but the game still treats them as mostly absent, except during guest matches, where only the guest leader has to stay alive and the other guest fighters still remain available for social activities. Starting in Acts 2 and 3, Classic mode turns into full permadeath.

Normal mode keeps enemy levels much closer to the chapter recommendation, which means weaker units are less likely to get flattened and you’ve got room to try out classes, skills, and less-than-perfect builds. Hard mode bumps both levels and stats, with elite enemies often sitting 3+ levels above a chapter’s target, so Classic plus Hard is the roughest combination.

If you want the safest first run in Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave, go with Casual plus Normal. If you want real tension and don’t mind resetting battles to keep your favorite units alive, Classic is the one.

Before you even reach the prologue, Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave has you lock in two separate settings: Casual or Classic for how unit death works, and Normal or Hard for battle difficulty.
