Discord<\/a> starts rolling out its revamped age-verification system<\/a><\/strong> worldwide on Wednesday, adding automatic age-grouping and tighter protections for teens, the company says.<\/p>\n

It had originally planned to launch the system in February, then backed off after users pushed back on the idea of uploading IDs and selfies<\/strong>. Discord now says it can place more than 90% of users into one of three groups, Adult, Teen, or Unconfirmed, using account age, device and activity data, usage patterns, and the kinds of servers people join. It says that process does not use private messages, calls, profile information, or demographic data.<\/p>\n\n

If the system gets it wrong, users can appeal. Discord says those appeals can be handled with a credit card<\/strong>, Apple age data, Google Play<\/a> age data, or ID and biometric checks.<\/p>\n\n

If you use Discord often, these are the parts you’ll notice. Teens won’t be allowed<\/strong> into age-restricted spaces. Message requests from people who aren’t friends will be pushed into a separate inbox. Friend requests from users with no mutual friends will come with warnings. Discord also says some facial age estimation happens on the device, and that outside vendors must delete documents after returning only an age result.<\/p>\n\n

Critics still aren’t convinced. They continue to point to what they describe as a 2025 breach<\/strong> involving about 70,000 IDs and selfies, and they warn that systems like this create tempting targets for hackers, can produce biased results, and make anonymity harder to keep.<\/p>\n\n

Discord says the shift is being driven by new regulations<\/strong>. It also says it has already launched similar systems in Brazil and Texas, and that the broader rollout begins on Discord on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
