Most of the new Apple CarPlay changes land in four places: app layout, widgets, appearance, and Siri. On compatible Apple iPhones and supported vehicles, CarPlay now gives you more room to shape the in-car experience to your liking. You can make most of those changes from the iPhone itself. CarPlay Ultra<\/a> is also starting to show up, first in Aston Martin<\/strong> vehicles, with deeper access to the instrument cluster, climate controls, and trip data.<\/p>\n

For app layout, the path is iPhone Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Apps. That\u2019s where you can reorder apps or remove the ones you don\u2019t want up front, including Apple Maps, Messages, Music, and Podcasts<\/strong>. How many icons fit on that first screen depends on the size and shape of your car\u2019s display.<\/p>\n\n

Apple iOS 26 adds dashboard widgets<\/strong> too. Weather, Calendar, and Clock are part of the mix, along with Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions.<\/p>\n\n

You can also switch between Automatic, Light, and Dark modes, then change the wallpaper and icon styling to match. Brightness usually tracks with your car\u2019s dash controls. Siri still does a lot of the heavy lifting, since you can use \u201cHey Siri\u201d or the steering-wheel button for messages, navigation, calls<\/strong>, and music. Apple iOS 27 is expected to make Siri more capable in the car.<\/p>\n\n

If you use Apple CarPlay a lot, these are the kinds of tweaks worth taking five minutes to set up. The gap shows up in owner surveys too: 2024 J.D. Power<\/strong> scores gave CarPlay-equipped systems 840 out of 1,000, compared with 805 for built-in systems.<\/p>\n\n

Apple CarPlay is available now on supported iPhones and vehicles. CarPlay Ultra, for the moment, starts with Aston Martin and adds that deeper instrument-cluster<\/strong>, climate, and trip-data integration.<\/p>\n
