A Claude research model helped find bottlenecks, build benchmarks, open pull requests, write fixes, and keep an eye on deployments, while Anthropic engineers set the goals and approved the changes.

Most of the speedup came from hundreds of small fixes. Anthropic says it measured those gains with CPU instruction counts rather than wall-clock timing. On one heavily used path, the company says a 48% drop in instructions led to a 78% cut in latency, and it has added new CI checks to catch regressions before they ship.

One example was a 20-line fix that got rid of a roughly one-second syntax-highlighting freeze on replies containing em dashes or curly quotes, by steering clear of a slow V8 UTF-16 regex path. If you use Claude a lot, that’s the kind of delay you’d actually notice.

To keep the rollout from going sideways, Anthropic says it used nearly 200 flags, later removed more than half of them, and sent the riskiest changes to employees first. The results are now live on Claude.ai and in the Claude desktop app, as Anthropic says its 8x more code per quarter, with guardrails, benchmarking, and verification doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

Anthropic spent two weeks in August tuning Claude.ai and the Claude desktop app, and it says about three times faster when you use it.
