Fans still treat Joel and Ellie as the heart of the series, but Part II clearly echoes that relationship through Abby and Lev. At the same time, Abby and Ellie are often read as distorted reflections of each other: both lose father figures, both get consumed by grief, and both slide into revenge.

Neil Druckmann, who heads Naughty Dog, has said there’s a concept in place. He’s also told fans not to count on The Last of Us Part 3 happening, even while mentioning several Last of Us-related projects.

Part II’s ending leaves the door wide open. Ellie walks away from revenge, but she’s emotionally unmoored, while Abby gets out with Lev in one of the few genuinely hopeful beats this world allows.

If you’ve been following the fan debate, there’s a Reddit thread worth reading, with nearly 400 comments split between people who want more Abby and Lev, people who think Abby and Lev’s story should stay untouched, and people who argue Ellie feels less finished and makes the stronger lead.

There are also the usual unverified rumors about new scavenger protagonists. Meanwhile, HBO’s Season 2 casting of Abby, Dina, and Jesse keeps this stretch of the story in view.

For now, The Last of Us Part II is available on PlayStation while everyone waits for something official.

Late 2026, and Naughty Dog still hasn’t announced The Last of Us Part 3, a possible third main entry in The Last of Us series.
