These phones need the extra protection more than a regular slab phone does: they have hinges, moving parts, and usually weaker dust resistance, and repair costs can get out of hand fast.

Most foldable phone cases cover the back, the side rails, the camera housing, and the raised rim around the outer display. Those raised lips do help with scratches , lens scuffs, and the kind of minor drops that happen all the time. Slimmer cases still rarely give you real 360-degree coverage, though. The hinge is where the biggest differences show up. Entry-level cases often leave it exposed, while Casetify, Supcase, CaseBorne, and OtterBox add hinge guards that can feel like cheap insurance, even if that extra protection also means more bulk and weight.

Protection for the outer screen isn’t always included, either. Sometimes you only get a raised edge, a few gaps, or very little coverage, which means you may need a separate screen protector or a bundle that comes with one. Built-in tempered glass can change the touch feel too, and it can add glare or a bit of thickness. If you use a foldable every day, a good case is worth buying. You still need to wipe the inner screen before closing it and clear lint, sand, or grit out of the hinge, because even newer aramid-fiber, military-grade cases can’t stop fine debris. You can find foldable phone cases from major accessory brands, and foldables themselves are getting tougher, with stronger ultra-thin glass, longer-lasting hinges, and IP68 models like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

For most people buying a foldable, the first accessory that makes the most sense is a case.
