Netflix dropped the 10-episode A Different World sequel series on September 24, 2026, and it didn’t take long to catch on. It’s already at No. 1 on Netflix’s U.S. TV chart. This time, the story follows Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, through her freshman year at Hillman College. So no, this isn’t a straight reboot. It’s a continuation, using the HBCU setting to pull in longtime fans while introducing a new cast, new friendships, and a fresh round of campus drama.

Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are back in recurring and guest roles, which gives the show a real connection to the original while Deborah Wayne and her classmates start shaping Hillman College’s next chapter. Netflix has also shifted the series into a single-camera comedy-drama format, giving it more room to deal with activism, financial aid pressure, and ICE presence on campus in a tone that feels more current.

If you loved the original, or you’re just now getting to Hillman College, this sequel seems like an easy one to add to your watchlist. It currently has an 82% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s streaming on Netflix now.
