They’re available now as a non-invasive option if you need that kind of support.

The company was founded in 2023 by Polish researcher Konrad Zieliński. He lost his voice to cancer while studying at the University of Warsaw, then went on to complete a PhD in bionic systems for laryngectomees. Uhura Bionics says its devices can produce speech that feels more natural and expressive than an electrolarynx, with pitch and emotion for laughing, shouting, and even singing, without the surgery, upkeep, and risk of complications that come with implanted prostheses.

Right now, you can pick between a $500 basic model and the $1,500 Whitney, which Uhura Bionics named after Whitney Houston. The company still has work to do on personalization, though, so users don’t end up sounding too similar, and it also needs more high-pitched options for many women. If you’re looking for something that sounds more human, this is a space to keep an eye on. Still, independent validation remains limited, affordability for lower-income users hasn’t been solved, and the field already includes Atos Medical, Laronix, brain-computer interfaces, and emotional speech systems.

The devices are on sale now directly from Uhura Bionics as wellness products, which means you’ll usually be paying out of pocket. At the same time, the company is seeking Class I medical device status in Europe, planning a later push into the US, and going after what Konrad Zieliński estimates is about a $2 billion market.

Uhura Bionics has started selling wearable voice devices for people trying to regain speech after a laryngectomy.
