There’s no other way to put it or sugarcoat it: it grossed 58.5 million and cost 63, meaning it didn’t even make back what was spent. A full-blown disaster. And yet, from the very beginning, the third installment of 28 Days Later was conceived as a trilogy, and Danny Boyle insists this isn’t the end: we’ll see 28 Years Later 3, and we’ll see our favorite characters.

28 Days Later, part 3 of 3

“28 Years 3, or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it. When, I’m not sure, but there’s a script, a very good script by Alex Garland”, Boyle says. Of course, nobody can guarantee anything, and even if it’s the end of his zombie saga it’s possible he’s fighting to get a budget to match, but without going overboard like on The Bone Temple.

What’s more: “It’ll have plenty of Cillian Murphy. Whether he’ll strip off, I don’t know. He has an Oscar now”. Although Murphy won it for Oppenheimer, he probably doesn’t want to pass up the chance to work again with his old friend and say goodbye to one of his essential characters. It’s worth noting that Boyle is embroiled in controversy for using some AI in the post-production of Ink, his new film, something that apparently isn’t going to dampen his future plans.

What’s more, he’s taken the opportunity to say who he thinks should be 007: “They should cast Jack O’Connell as James Bond”. Well then, another point for O’Connell. Whether James Bond or 28 Years Later 3 arrives first, I’m afraid that’s something we’ll find out soon enough.

28 years later: The Bone Temple was a failure.
