That puts it in place as one of Xbox’s biggest exclusives of the year.

The game goes back 14 years to Emergence Day and puts younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago front and center. It’s aiming for the darker, horror-leaning feel of the original trilogy, while The Coalition rebuilds everything in Unreal Engine 5. It also comes with the studio’s longest linear campaign yet, a reworked 4v4 Versus mode, and a new 12-player co-op Horde Siege.

So far, the response has been mixed, but leaning positive. Previews have pointed to the grim atmosphere, sharper combat, and stronger sense of tension. The Guardian was less sold, giving it a 3/5 and saying the campaign can start to feel repetitive. Other points are drawing attention too: Meat Shields and Chainsaw Duels won’t be there at launch, the Gears 5 cliffhanger still hasn’t been resolved, and the recent layoffs that affected story director Matt Searcy have only added to the scrutiny.

If you’ve been waiting for Gears of War to feel like Gears again, E-Day looks like it’ll be worth picking up when it arrives. If you wanted the series to move ahead instead of looking back, though, the heavy pull toward nostalgia may leave you colder.

You’ll be able to play Gears of War: E-Day on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and premium editions will get early access starting October 1.

Gears of War: E-Day, Xbox’s next prequel in the series, now has a date: October 6, 2026.
