Microsoft isn\u2019t putting Xbox<\/a> up for sale. After taking over in February 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma pushed back on reports that Microsoft had considered spinning the business off or selling it.<\/p>\n

She said that while Xbox is in the middle of a reset, following weak hardware sales and layoffs. Sharma, who stepped into the job in February 2026<\/strong>, said Xbox was \u201cnot healthy.\u201d She also said she has the support of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood. Her background is Microsoft and Instacart<\/a>, not games, and she\u2019s already making deep changes: cutting 3,200 jobs plus another 270, selling five studios, moving Halo<\/a>, Rare, and World\u2019s Edge under Activision, and shifting Obsidian to Bethesda. Analysts see Activision\u2019s model as the one Microsoft wants the rest of Xbox to follow.<\/p>\n\n

The financials help explain why. In Microsoft\u2019s fiscal 2026 results, gaming revenue fell 7%<\/strong> to 21.79 billion, and hardware revenue dropped 29%. Analysts say Xbox margins are \u201c3-10x lower\u201d than those of its peers, and that the business contributes 6% of Microsoft\u2019s profit, even with 500 million players across console, PC, and mobile, Candy Crush<\/a> included. Game Pass<\/a> got to 34 million, then started to slip. If you follow Xbox, this is the part to watch: Sharma wants to push that audience to 1 billion players through cloud growth in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia, stronger consoles, bigger franchises, creator ecosystems, and larger game worlds. That also includes Physint with Hideo Kojima, after Sony pulled out, reportedly for less than a typical first-party budget and with film and TV rights attached.<\/p>\n\n
