Ford CEO Jim Farley is warning US policymakers not to throw the door open to Chinese electric-vehicle makers<\/a>. His argument is simple: Europe has already shown how fast Chinese brands can take share and tighten the pressure on long-established car companies.<\/p>\n

In Western Europe, Chinese brands accounted for roughly 1 in 7<\/strong> battery-electric sales in the first five months of 2026, according to market estimates. Auto-market researcher Dataforce also put their wider EU share at a record 11.7% in August. Some industry forecasts now peg that figure at 20% by 2030, pushed by lower prices, strong in-car tech, and competitive design. That rise is landing on legacy automakers that are already paying for major shifts in EVs, software, and supply chains.<\/p>\n\n

The US market is tougher to break into because tariffs can run above 100%<\/strong>. Still, there are signs the barrier may not hold forever. Donald Trump has said Chinese brands could build cars in America if they set up plants and hire US workers. Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier, for his part, thinks Chinese brands could show up in about five years.<\/p>\n\n

Farley\u2019s warning carries extra weight given Ford\u2019s own ties in the space. The company is working with Geely on EV development in Spain and with CATL on batteries, all while taking heat from US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy over national security, supply-chain independence, and the influence of Chinese state-backed companies.<\/p>\n
