HBO\u2019s Lanterns<\/em> has wrapped its first season, and the finale takes a sharp turn with John Stewart. Rather than tying his rise to the Green Lantern Corps\u2019 usual willpower-based tradition<\/strong>, it rewrites both his origin and the source of his power by having John lean into fear.<\/p>\n

By the end, he doesn\u2019t join the Corps the standard way. He accepts a charge from Sinestro\u2019s newly forged lantern<\/strong>, recites a new oath built around fear, and gets an origin rewrite that says his parents had been conditioning him for this role since childhood.<\/p>\n\n

Sinestro pushes the idea even further, arguing that the Green Lantern Corps has misunderstood fear all along. At the same time, the yellow streaks<\/strong> in his lantern, along with the Halogram\u2019s warning, point to a dangerous kind of power that clearly isn\u2019t sanctioned.<\/p>\n\n

The finale also drops clear references to Parallax<\/strong> and the Sinestro Corps, then leaves even more mystery around the Guardians, the Manhunters, and Zoe surviving the shutdown. That last thread especially makes it feel like something else is already moving, and it\u2019s already slipping past their control.<\/p>\n\n

Aaron Pierre\u2019s John Stewart is already set to appear in the DCU film Man of Tomorrow<\/em>, so the changes here look like they reach past this series alone. HBO still hasn\u2019t officially renewed season 2<\/a><\/strong>, but reports say Lanterns<\/em> is averaging about 19 million weekly viewers worldwide, with early work on another season already underway.<\/p>\n\n

If you follow Green Lantern lore, this finale has a lot riding on it. It redefines John Stewart<\/strong> through fear rather than pure will. The Lanterns<\/em> finale is available now on HBO.<\/p>\n
