That brings the total to about $818 million, before any post-judgment interest is added.

Selna said Masimo should receive the extra money because it was denied royalty payments during the infringement period. He rejected Apple’s argument against interest. Masimo had asked for about $243 million at 7 percent, but the court used Masimo’s borrowing rate instead, with annual compounding starting from the beginning of the infringement.

For people who follow Apple Watch legal battles, this comes out of the November 2025 jury verdict in California. That jury found that Apple Watch features, including heart-rate notifications, infringed Masimo’s U.S. Patent No. 10,433,776, a patent tied to pulse oximetry. The original $634 million award came from that verdict.

If you own an Apple Watch, the practical point is pretty narrow. This applies to past sales only, because Masimo’s patent expired in June 2022. The verdict doesn’t shut down the heart-rate features on current watches.

Apple already tried to overturn the award, or at least reduce it. Selna upheld it in July, and Apple is still appealing.

This also isn’t the whole fight. It’s one piece of a broader dispute that started in 2020, with a late-2023 U.S. International Trade Commission import ban affecting some Apple Watch models, temporary sales pauses in the U.S., blood oxygen workarounds on newer devices, and claims that Apple hired Masimo employees and drew on Masimo’s wearable health expertise.

In the Masimo patent case, Judge James Selna has ordered Apple to pay another $184 million in prejudgment interest.
