To work around that gap, The Coalition said it can move a couple of gigabytes over to the SSD and recover about 1GB of usable memory. That extra space helps the team hold onto the game’s dense environments and overall visual quality. Kate Rayner from The Coalition said Gears of War: E-Day wouldn’t have been possible in this same form on Xbox Series S without it.

That added headroom also lets Gears of War: E-Day handle roughly 1.6 million actors, which means more objects on screen, more detail, and busier combat spaces even on the lower-spec Series S. If that’s where you plan to play, it’s something to watch. The trade-off is still there: the 60fps target doesn’t include advanced Lumen reflections, and the heavier scenes have still shown the occasional frame-rate dip.

Gears of War: E-Day is coming to Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, and with other teams already looking into the same approach, there’s a good chance this won’t be the last time you see it in a future Xbox Series S game.

        Xbox
        Download

        <text class="rating-score__number" content="" text-anchor="middle" transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 25 31.0837)" data-auto="app-user-score"></text>

Gears of War: E-Day is in development for Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, and The Coalition has shared a closer look at one of the tricks making that possible on the smaller machine: a new Xbox Series S optimization built around a virtual RAM system that pulls from the console’s NVMe SSD.
