GameStop has reportedly pushed its used Sony PlayStation 5 Pro prices up to $1,399.99 for the digital model and $1,499.99 for the disc version. Both are now way above Sony’s $899.99 MSRP for a brand-new console.

A reportedly verified internal memo says the higher used pricing was intentional. Players and collectors didn’t take long to react, with plenty of them accusing GameStop of price gouging.

The reason probably isn’t complicated. Demand looks like it’s rising faster than supply, helped along by growing interest ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI, ongoing memory chip shortages that are still keeping stock tight, and GameStop seemingly pricing against the inflated resale market instead of Sony’s official retail price. The same memo reportedly shows trade-in offers of up to $850 for the physical model and $800 for the digital version, which suggests GameStop is paying a lot just to bring in more inventory.

Sony is handling things differently in Japan. There, Sony reportedly requires a Japanese PlayStation Network account and at least 60 hours of PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 play over two years just to enter a PlayStation 5 Pro lottery, while jailbreak demand for certain firmware versions may also be making supply even tighter. If you’re shopping for a PlayStation 5 Pro, GameStop’s used listing isn’t worth grabbing at these prices, and you can still look for new stock through Sony or other retailers.
