DC Comics has now released Doom Patrol #4, and it brings in Evelyn X while delivering one of the biggest lineup shifts this team has had in years. This issue pushes the Patrol deeper into its current upheaval, with the mission now centered on helping rejected metahumans and, as the book puts it, “saving the monsters.”

In Doom Patrol #4, Crazy Jane’s dominant persona, The Chief, takes over the leadership job once held by Niles Caulder and pushes the team toward a more hands-on rescue-and-support approach.

Evelyn X, once the avatar of the Cult of the Eternal Void, joins the team in Doom Patrol #4 as both a new protégé and a new member. Her powers bend reality and draw on the vacuum of space, which gives her the kind of potential that could scale to something cosmic, but what really gives the character weight is the trauma of having been used as a weapon by a cult.

For a team that started back in 1963 as “the world’s strangest heroes,” and has always been built around damaged outsiders whose powers are tangled up with their pain, Evelyn X feels like a natural fit for where the Patrol is heading, not just another villain-of-the-month problem. Even so, her history with the cult leaves that door open. She could still be a Trojan horse, and the next catastrophe the Doom Patrol has to somehow make it through.

If you follow Doom Patrol, this is a lineup change you’ll probably want to pick up. You can find Doom Patrol #4 wherever DC Comics are sold.
