India\u2019s Ministry of Communications pushed back today on Elon Musk\u2019s complaints about Starlink<\/a>\u2019s path to approval in India, saying the country\u2019s satellite-clearance process is fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory<\/strong>, not some protective wall for unnamed \u201coligarchs\u201d or a monopolistic squeeze.<\/p>\n

The ministry\u2019s position is straightforward: Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb, and Reliance Jio Space Technology all hold GMPCS licenses, and all three are still waiting on security clearance<\/strong> before they can get spectrum.<\/p>\n\n

So the real bottleneck is security<\/strong>. Indian rules on in-country gateways, data sovereignty, and lawful interception were shaped in part by what the country learned from the 2008 Mumbai attacks.<\/p>\n\n

SpaceX has already spent more than five years<\/strong> getting ready. It has tied up with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, appointed Prabhakar Jayakumar to run its India operations, and set up more than 20 gateway sites along with hundreds of antennas. At India Mobile Congress, Lauren Dreyer also said Starlink wants to back Narendra Modi\u2019s push for universal connectivity, serving as a complement in hard-to-reach areas.<\/p>\n\n

And this story still matters if you\u2019ve been following satellite internet in India. After the 2021 preorders<\/strong>, the 2022 refunds, and the fight over spectrum allocation, the market could exceed $528 million by 2030. Even so, Starlink still isn\u2019t commercially available in India, and when it does arrive, it will still cost more than the country\u2019s ultra-cheap mobile data.<\/p>\n
