Apple TV+<\/a> has pulled the plug on Dope Thief after a single season. Producer David W. Zucker said Apple decided not to continue, even though, by his account, there was a workable path<\/strong> for the story to keep going and the Ridley Scott-produced drama had done \u201crelatively well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott wasn’t just lending his name to it, either. He produced the series through Scott Free Productions and directed the premiere. Based on Dennis Tafoya\u2019s work, the show centered on two longtime friends from Philadelphia who pose as DEA agents so they can rob drug dealers, then find themselves tangled up in something far more dangerous<\/strong>. It was designed to function either as a one-and-done limited series or as an ongoing drama. Critics were generally favorable, it picked up a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, and Brian Tyree Henry landed an Emmy nomination from the Television Academy.<\/p>\n\n

The production also hit an early bump: Michael Mando exited and Wagner Moura stepped in after what was reported as an on-set clash<\/strong> with a co-star.<\/p>\n\n

If prestige crime dramas are your thing, Dope Thief is still easy to recommend. Even with the strong reviews, the awards attention, and Scott in the mix, it still wasn’t enough to earn a second season<\/strong>. Scott Free, meanwhile, still has Alien: Earth coming to FX<\/a> and Blade Runner 2099 headed to Prime Video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
