Netflix<\/a> has added Animals<\/em>, a new crime thriller with Ben Affleck directing and starring<\/a>, and it puts him back in territory he knows well: a slick, high-pressure story driven by tension, pace, and a cast strong enough to carry you through even when the movie falls short of his best work.<\/p>\n

Affleck plays Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose finances are already strained and whose marriage is already starting to crack when his young son is kidnapped. A multimillion-dollar ransom demand<\/strong> leaves Mark and his wife, Abigail, scrambling for options they simply don’t have.<\/p>\n\n

The movie also weaves in money, public image, and political ambition against the backdrop of a heated LA mayoral race. It’s loosely inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low<\/em>, and the supporting cast is solid, with Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, and a much-praised Gillian Anderson as a criminal fixer.<\/p>\n\n

Reviews have been mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, Animals<\/em> is sitting at 38 percent<\/strong> with critics praising the performances while arguing that its ideas about class, wealth, politics, and marriage never get the depth they need before the story slides into a conventional ending that grows more melodramatic as it goes.<\/p>\n\n

If you’re in the mood for a polished adult thriller with a strong hook, Animals<\/em> is an easy one to put on. Just don’t expect another Gone Girl<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n
