Drawn from former CIA analyst John Nixon\u2019s memoir Debriefing the President<\/em>, it closes with a finale that brings the show\u2019s argument about the Iraq War into even sharper focus.<\/p>\n

In the last episode, Joel Kinnaman\u2019s John Nixon goes back to Washington to brief President George W. Bush. Saddam Hussein has already been captured and is left in Iraq to face execution. The finale doesn\u2019t chase a big action payoff<\/strong>. It stays with the aftermath, and with the question of how a \u201cwar of choice\u201d gets justified, narrated, and then absorbed. Using Nixon\u2019s memoir Debriefing the President<\/em> as its foundation, the series turns the 2003 hunt and interrogation into a political argument about the failed search for weapons of mass destruction. Waleed Zuaiter\u2019s layered take on Saddam Hussein gives that argument extra weight, pushing John Nixon past procedure and into history, power, and the ways America misunderstood Iraq.<\/p>\n\n

Kinnaman has said he shaped John Nixon through time spent with the real Nixon, especially Nixon\u2019s devotion to his wife and his position as an Iraq expert the George W. Bush administration sidelined<\/strong> while it pursued a Saddam Hussein-al-Qaeda link. If you\u2019re looking for a historical thriller with a clear point of view, this finale is worth watching, even with critics split on the series and with much mainstream coverage offering only a limited Iraqi perspective.
