HBO’s new Harry Potter TV series, which will air on HBO and stream on Max, has been given a TV-14 rating. That points to a darker version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

That’s a clear jump from the first Harry Potter film, which was rated PG. It also changes the franchise’s original pattern, where kids could start young and grow up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione until the later stories reached PG-13.

That older entry point now seems aimed more at adults in their 30s and 40s. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone reportedly pulled in more than 40 million views on Max in 2024. The game Hogwarts Legacy showed that the brand still has real pull with both younger fans and older ones. And with the franchise often valued, by some estimates, at $25 billion to $30 billion, Warner Bros. has plenty of reason to go after adults too.

If you’re looking for a more prestige-minded reboot, this shift is worth watching. Warner Bros. is still keeping kid-friendly ways in, including Bloomsbury’s Pocket Potters books for ages 7 to 10. But that two-track approach could split the audience by making the beginning of the story feel less inviting to children.
