Marvel Comics has released The Amazing Spider-Man #1000, and one of the biggest surprises in it is a sharply reworked Mysterio in \u201cStill Standing,\u201d from Noah Hawley, Patrick Gleason, Marcio Menyz, Erick Arciniega, and Joe Caramagna.<\/p>\n

In \u201cStill Standing\u201d from The Amazing Spider-Man #1000, Quentin Beck shows up in a form that\u2019s nothing like the usual fishbowl helmet, smoke, and green-cape showmanship. Here, he\u2019s a frail old man<\/strong> haunting an elderly Peter Parker in a nursing home, and the only real clue to who he is comes from his amulet, which Peter\u2019s grandson recognizes. Beck uses illusions to convince Peter that Gwen Stacy is still alive, and he leans hard on Peter\u2019s age, grief, and uncertainty. The whole thing lands closer to psychological horror than superhero action. Quentin says he wants to \u201creturn the favor\u201d for Spider-Man ruining his life, but that edge starts to slip when he sees how much pain Peter is in. He admits he\u2019s dying, then gives Peter one small, fleeting piece of closure with a Gwen memory pulled from Peter\u2019s own mind. It makes this take far quieter, and a lot creepier, than Jake Gyllenhaal\u2019s Marvel Cinematic Universe version<\/a> of Mysterio, even if that movie incarnation\u2019s fate still isn\u2019t clear. It also reads less like the start of some permanent relaunch and more like a standout one-off in a big anniversary issue.<\/p>\n\n

If you follow Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man #1000 is worth picking up for one of the most memorable<\/strong> Mysterio stories Marvel has done in years.<\/p>\n\n
